Poetry
Tossing Waves
storm worn but still afloat
a precious balance
separates sky and depth
tossing waves
caress us
and we dream
of a ship we steer
free and clear
a fate unfettered
by necessity
but we can no more will the future
than seaweed alter currents
falter, father,
fail, or triumph
Only motion remains
A Christmas Poem
We fight a war of attrition.
A constant vigil.
Complexity beyond our comprehension;
As cells die, eat, multiply, and divide.
A system at odds with the universe.
Life cannot abide entropy,
And we cannot abide the inevitable.
We foresee the final cadence.
Telegraphed by a million lives before us...
we end, but know not why or when,
Or where.
We assume we are contained
Conveniently stopping at the edges...
Where skin and atmosphere romance
Yet we see... light intertwines into vision and thought
And we feel...canyon, heartbreak,
twilight and rage,
stars and glory
And we extend...a narration of rivers that moved like snakes,
and oceans that know no fear
So come winter. I will tend the fire til eyes darken and lose the thread.
I fear you not because beautiful children
Will learn to sing
And no eternities can lessen
Their joy
Hitler's Bullet
resonant images
seduction of sensibilities
where sense and reason rebel
and fiction fantasizes
significant and suffering
saturated but dissatisfied
heroic at last in thought alone
yet alone with thoughts uneasy
for internal truths gnaw eternally
at conscience and the edge of our
consciousness
“Let them die heroic for Germany”
a bully pulpit for the Fuhrer
then bullet and ampule of poison
silenced this bullshit finally
slow the silent chemistry
sows again the fantasy
of male virtue injured
and malleable society
takes up the drum of victory
gore and glory pour forth again
those resonant images
that lure young men
into psychopathic purpose
willing we attend the spectacle
and willing we are victimized
the flags of fiction unfurl
and the trumpets call to arms
so conveniently we forget
the only truth that Hitler told
was in the single bullet he fired
that found its flesh and finally freed
him from his tortured fantasy
